The Harz region is renowned for its numerous natural and cultural treasures. The Cave Experience Centre (HEZ) near Bad Grund shows that caves can offer both:

Topfstein Cave

Caves always have something magical about them, including the Iberg Stalactite Cave. It is one of the smaller show caves. Open to visitors since 1874, the cave with its massive floor stalagmites, impressive sinter cascades and bizarre ceiling potholes offers a fascinating underground world and the pure thrill of caving.

Lichtenstein Cave

The Bronze Age ritual cave at Lichtenstein near Osterode, which cannot itself be visited, has been recreated in the HEZ museum and is particularly exciting for the youngest visitors to crawl through. 3,000-year-old cave artefacts are displayed here. And here, too, you can uncover the secrets that speleological research has revealed about an extended family living in the Harz region 3,000 years ago.

Cave Experience

The HEZ focuses on both caves: one underground and authentic, the other above ground and an exciting museum experience. Both are places of discovery for children and families alike. The replica cave is suitable for the very youngest children, whilst the stalactite cave is for children aged 4 and over. Good to know
